The last editorial explored the healing benefits of touch but there are other activities, like owning a pet, that also come with health benefits. Having a close bond with a domestic animal has been shown to increase endorphins, those “feel good” hormones, that make pet owners more relaxed and happier when interacting with their pets. There are also various physiological benefits including decreased production of stress hormones and improved cardiovascular health.
Dog ownership comes with the added opportunity to increase your exercise level and spend more time outdoors. One of my friends has recently adopted a puppy for the first time in her life and in my neighborhood I’ve noticed two new puppies being walked. Now that so many people are working from home as a result of the pandemic, they now have the time and flexibility to embrace pet ownership.
Animal shelters have reported an increase in adoptions during the pandemic even though many people have had to give up animals as a result of financial hardship. Shelters report concerns that the increase in adoptions are not matched with an understanding of the commitment required to bring an animal into your home. They are afraid that when people return to work outside the home that these pets may be returned. But pets have a way of stealing your heart!
For those who choose to have a pet and who understand the responsibility, our furry friends are a wonderful source of companionship. It is hard to sustain feelings of loneliness when you have a pet who rushes to the door to greet you when you come in or who cuddles up when you feel sad. Pets bring so much joy into our lives and provide us with unconditional love. A very fair exchange.
