Research has consistently shown that when we touch, cuddle, hug or hold hands, the body releases “feel good” hormones (like serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin). Once these neurotransmitters are released into our bodies we experience feelings of well-being and happiness as well as relaxation. They also provide a boost to our immune system.
Serotonin is the most extensively researched neurotransmitter in the central nervous system primarily because of its role in the immune system. It’s actually true that “ when we are happy, we are healthy.” We are all aware of the fact that we are more susceptible to illness when we are unhappy, exhausted and feeling stressed out.
COVID-19 with it’s social distancing and lockdowns has interrupted our ability to touch. It has also forced the elderly and those who live alone into isolation and created huge concerns about the effects of the pandemic on mental health and suicide rates. Caring touch has disappeared from some people’s lives and with it the mitigating effects on mood.
For those of us who can, hug those people you care for in your circle. If you live alone, book a massage or other form of bodywork so you can experience the healing power of touch. Hopefully the days of being able to hug are in the not too distant future. Touch is nature’s natural way to boost the immune system and enhance our happiness. I think we can all agree that it beats taking a pill!
